Register for School

Welcome to Metro Nashville Public Schools

We look forward to welcoming your child and working with your family. This section will take you through exactly what you need to do to register your child for school to make the process as simple as possible.

But, before you begin the process as outlined on this registration page:students hugging

  • We offer simple online registration and in-person registration at your nearest Enrollment Center if you cannot register online.
  • Need a Translator? Do you need a translator or speak a language other than English at home?
  • Applying for Pre-K? Pre-K follows a different process.
  • Withdrawing from school?
    • To withdraw a student from school, please call or email an Enrollment Center. A parent or guardian photo identification is required.
  • Not a Davidson County resident?

Kindergarten Students

All rising Kindergarten students must register for school, even if they attended an MNPS Pre-K last year. Families can register online or make an appointment at an Enrollment Center. Visit the Early Learning department for Kindergarten registration information.

Schools in your Zone and School Options

MNPS, as a default, will assign children to schools based on zones. This means that the school your child is automatically assigned to depends entirely on your address.

  • Check out our pathway maps to see which schools your student will feed into.
  •  You can find your zoned school by using our school finder search tool.

However, if you would prefer your child attend a different school than the one corresponding to your zone, you have the option to fill out an application (we call these "optional applications") and apply to another school of your choice. Your eligibility to apply to schools outside your zone depends upon the space available in those schools, and transportation is the responsibility of the family. Families also may apply to one of several charter schools.

Learn more about School Options.

Zoned Option Schools

Some families have a choice between two different zoned schools.

These zoned option schools provide students living in neighborhoods that are primarily low-income and racially isolated the opportunity to attend a more diverse school outside of their neighborhood. Students who are eligible for a zoned option essentially have two zoned schools:

  • Students may choose to enroll in their zoned school, which is typically closer to their home, or
  • Enroll in a zoned option school

Both of the school choices are guaranteed options that come with school bus transportation, just as their zoned school does. Eligible families must complete the Zoned Option Form provided by an enrollment specialist at the time of registration.
